How to Calculate Test Grades
Enter the total number of questions on your test and how many you answered incorrectly. The calculator computes your score as a percentage, fraction, and letter grade using the standard US grading scale.
The Formula
Percentage = (Correct Answers ÷ Total Questions) × 100
Example: On a 35-question test with 4 wrong answers, you got 31 correct. Score = (31 ÷ 35) × 100 = 88.57%, which is a B+.
Standard US Grading Scale
- A+ (97–100%): Exceptional performance
- A (93–96%): Excellent
- A- (90–92%): Very good
- B+ (87–89%): Good
- B (83–86%): Above average
- B- (80–82%): Slightly above average
- C+ (77–79%): Average
- C (73–76%): Satisfactory
- C- (70–72%): Below average
- D+ (67–69%): Below expectations
- D (63–66%): Poor
- D- (60–62%): Barely passing
- F (below 60%): Failing
Understanding Your Score
Percentage Grade
The most universal measure. Your correct answers divided by total questions, times 100. This number is the same regardless of which grading scale your school uses.
Fraction Grade
Shows exactly how many questions you answered correctly out of the total, such as 31/35.
Letter Grade
Maps your percentage to a letter using the standard scale. Note that some schools use different cutoffs (e.g., 70% for a C instead of 73%). Always check your school's policy.
Tips to Improve Test Scores
- Spaced repetition: Review material at increasing intervals rather than cramming
- Practice tests: Simulate exam conditions to build recall under pressure
- Active recall: Test yourself instead of re-reading notes
- Error analysis: Review wrong answers to understand your weak areas
