How to Calculate Time Until an Event
The time until any event is the difference between the target date/time and the current moment. This calculator handles all the math — crossing midnight, month boundaries, and leap years — and shows a live countdown that updates every second.
Manual Method
- Convert both times to the same format (24-hour is easiest).
- Subtract current time from the target time.
- If the target is on a different day, add 24 hours per day difference.
- Borrow as needed: 1 hour = 60 minutes, 1 day = 24 hours.
Common Countdowns
| Event | Typical Wait |
|---|---|
| End of work day (5 PM) | 0–8 hours |
| Lunch break (12 PM) | 0–4 hours |
| Next weekend | 0–5 days |
| Flight departure | Hours to days |
| Holiday | Days to months |
| Birthday / anniversary | Days to months |
