How to Calculate Square Yards
Square yards measure area — the space inside a two-dimensional shape. To find square yards from feet, multiply length × width, then divide by 9.
Formula
Square yards = (Length in ft × Width in ft) ÷ 9
If your measurements are in inches, divide by 1,296 (36 × 36) instead. If in yards already, just multiply length × width directly.

Common Uses
- Carpet and flooring: Most carpet is priced per square yard. Measure your room in feet and convert.
- Landscaping: Sod, turf, and ground cover are sometimes sold by the square yard.
- Fabric and upholstery: Large fabric quantities may be quoted in square yards.
- Concrete and paving: Some contractors quote flatwork in square yards.
- Real estate: Land area comparisons in yard-based measurements.
Ordering Tips
- Add 10–15% extra for waste, cuts, and pattern matching when ordering carpet or flooring.
- For irregularly shaped rooms, break the space into rectangles, calculate each, and add them together.
- Always round up — you can't buy a fraction of a yard from most suppliers.
- Check whether your supplier quotes per square yard or per square foot before comparing prices.
