How to Use This Calculator

Calculate time between two points in two ways:

  • Simple time: Calculate hours between two times on the same day
  • Between dates: Calculate hours between two different dates and times

Common Time Calculations

  • Work hours: Track daily work time from clock-in to clock-out, minus unpaid breaks
  • Event duration: Calculate length of meetings, events, or activities
  • Overtime: Hours over 40/week are paid at 1.5× (time and a half) under federal law. Some states require daily overtime over 8 hours
  • Project tracking: Measure time spent on tasks for billing or productivity analysis

Work Hours and Pay

A standard full-time schedule is 40 hours per week, or 2,080 hours per year (52 weeks). With 2 weeks paid vacation, the actual working hours are 2,000.

Overtime Calculation

Federal law (FLSA) requires overtime pay at 1.5× regular rate for non-exempt employees working over 40 hours/week. Example: at $20/hour, overtime is $30/hour. Some states (California, Alaska, Nevada, Colorado) also require daily overtime after 8 hours.

Converting Time to Decimal Hours

Payroll systems use decimal hours, not minutes. To convert: divide minutes by 60.

  • 7 hours 30 minutes = 7.50 hours
  • 8 hours 15 minutes = 8.25 hours
  • 6 hours 45 minutes = 6.75 hours
  • 5 hours 20 minutes = 5.33 hours
