Time Rounding Rules

The Department of Labor permits rounding to the nearest increment if it doesn't consistently favor the employer. Common increments:

  • 6 minutes (1/10 hour): 8:07 AM rounds to 8:06, 8:09 rounds to 8:12
  • 15 minutes (1/4 hour): 8:07 AM rounds to 8:00, 8:08 rounds to 8:15
  • 30 minutes (1/2 hour): Less common, largest increment the DOL generally allows

Overtime Rules by State

Federal law requires 1.5x overtime after 40 hours/week. Some states add further protections:

Break Requirements

Federal law doesn't require breaks, but most states do:

  • Meal breaks: Most states require a 30-minute unpaid meal break after 5-6 hours of work
  • Rest breaks: Many states require a paid 10-minute break per 4 hours worked
  • Minors: Stricter break requirements apply to workers under 18

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the time card calculator work?

Enter clock-in and clock-out times for each day, along with break time. The calculator automatically totals your hours for the week and can calculate pay with overtime.

How is overtime calculated?

Federal law (FLSA) requires overtime at 1.5x regular rate for non-exempt employees over 40 hours/week. Some states also require daily overtime after 8 hours.

What does rounding time mean?

Time rounding adjusts clock-in/out times to the nearest increment (e.g., 15 minutes). The DOL allows rounding if it averages out fairly over time. 15-minute rounding is most common.

Are breaks included in work hours?

Unpaid meal breaks (typically 30-60 min) are deducted. Short rest breaks under 20 minutes are generally paid and should not be deducted.
