Army Body Fat Standards (AR 600-9)

The U.S. Army uses the circumference-based method to assess body composition when a soldier exceeds screening weight. This calculator implements the official DoD formula used on DA Form 5501.

Maximum Body Fat by Age Group

Age GroupMale MaxFemale Max
17-2020%30%
21-2722%32%
28-3924%34%
40+26%36%

The DoD Circumference Formula

Males: %BF = 86.010 × log₁₀(waist − neck) − 70.041 × log₁₀(height) + 36.76

Females: %BF = 163.205 × log₁₀(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 × log₁₀(height) − 78.387

All measurements in inches. The result is rounded to the nearest whole number.

How to Measure

SiteLocationNotes
NeckJust below the larynxTape perpendicular to long axis of neck. Round down to nearest 0.5"
Waist (Male)At navel (belly button)Horizontal tape at navel level. Round up to nearest 0.5"
Waist (Female)Narrowest pointNatural waist, usually between ribs and hip bone. Round up
Hip (Female)Widest point of buttocksHorizontal tape at maximum protrusion. Round up

Measurement Tips

  • Take three measurements at each site and average them
  • Neck rounds down to nearest 0.5 inch
  • Waist and hip round up to nearest 0.5 inch
  • Measure on bare skin, not over clothing
  • Keep the tape snug but not compressing the skin
  • Soldier should stand upright with arms at sides

What Happens If You Fail?

  • Soldiers are enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP)
  • Must show progress at monthly weigh-ins
  • Given 6 months to meet standards
  • Failure to meet standards can result in separation
  • Flagging actions prevent favorable personnel actions (promotion, schooling)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Army body fat calculator?

It uses the DoD circumference-based method from AR 600-9 to estimate body fat percentage. The Army uses this when a soldier exceeds screening weight to determine if they meet body composition standards.

How does the Army measure body fat?

The Army uses the circumference method: neck and waist measurements for males; neck, waist, and hip for females. Measurements are taken at specific anatomical landmarks and averaged from three readings.

What are the Army body fat limits?

Males: 20% (17-20), 22% (21-27), 24% (28-39), 26% (40+). Females: 30% (17-20), 32% (21-27), 34% (28-39), 36% (40+). These are maximum allowable percentages by age group.

When does the Army tape test happen?

Soldiers who exceed the screening weight table for their height are "taped" — measured using the circumference method. This typically happens during the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) or annual body composition assessment.

Where exactly do I measure?

Neck: just below the larynx (Adam's apple), perpendicular to the axis. Waist: males at navel level, females at narrowest point. Hip (females only): at the widest point of the buttocks. Round to nearest 0.5 inch.

How accurate is the tape test?

The circumference method has a standard error of 3-4% compared to hydrostatic weighing. It can overestimate body fat in muscular individuals and underestimate in those with less muscle mass. It remains the standard for military assessment.
