The Mass Formula

Mass is calculated using the density formula rearranged to solve for mass:

m = ρ × V

Where m is mass, ρ (rho) is density, and V is volume. This is one of three rearrangements of the density equation:

  • Find mass: m = ρ × V
  • Find density: ρ = m / V
  • Find volume: V = m / ρ

Can I use this for liquids?

Yes. Enter the liquid density (water is about 1,000 kg per cubic meter, milk about 1,030, gasoline about 750) and the volume. The calculator computes the mass of that volume of liquid.

What is the mass of a steel cube with 10 cm sides?

Volume = 10 times 10 times 10 = 1000 cubic centimeters = 0.001 cubic meters. Steel density = 7850 kg per cubic meter. Mass = 7850 times 0.001 = 7.85 kg (about 17.3 pounds).

Does mass change with altitude or location?

No. Mass is a fixed property of the object and does not change with location, altitude, or gravity. Weight changes with gravity (you weigh less on a mountain or on the Moon), but mass stays constant.
