Calendar Days vs School Days Remaining

Weekends do not count as class days, so the school days left are always fewer than the calendar days left. Use this reference to translate weeks remaining into class days and calendar days (before subtracting any holidays):

Understanding the Terms

School Days

The weekdays (Monday through Friday) on which classes are actually held. The countdown counts these separately because they are what students and teachers care about — the number of times they still have to show up.

Calendar Days

Every day on the calendar, including Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Calendar days are what the seconds-and-minutes live countdown ticks through; school days are a filtered subset.

Instructional Day

A day that counts toward a state or district minimum for required teaching time. Most US states mandate 170 to 180 instructional days, which is why the standard school year runs about 36 weeks.

Dismissal Time

The clock time when classes end for the day (for example 3:15 PM). Enter this in End of School Day mode to count down to the final bell rather than to midnight.

Semester and Term

Divisions of the school year. A two-semester year splits into roughly 90 instructional days each; trimester and quarter systems divide the same 180 days into three or four blocks.
